چکیده

We investigate the motion of artificial satellites with large area-to-mass ratios in high-altitude low inclined orbits, perturbed simultaneously by solar radiation pressure andEarth’s oblateness. Our study is based on recent theoretical advances in circumplanetary dust dynamics (Hamilton & Krivov 1996). Applying these methods to the motion of balloon satellites, we write down and analyze the orbit-averaged equations of motion in planar approximation. Contrary to many previous works, our consideration imposes no restrictions on eccentricities and radiation pressure strengths. The results show how the eccentricity and apses line of a satellite orbit evolve with time for various area-to-mass ratios, geocentric distances, and initial data. Our special interest is with complicated dynamical effects arising from the two perturbing forces above. We demonstrate the possibility of dramatic orbital changes under small variations of initial data and force parameters. For typical balloon satellite parameters, these unusual effects may take place at altitudes between one and two Earth’s radii.

Development of a solid-state inflation balloon for aerodynamic drag assisted deorbit of CubeSats

We have proposed and are currently developing a deorbit system for small satellites in collaboration with NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) under a Small Satellite Technology Partnership (SSTP) Grant. In this report we will describe the current development of the Solid State Inflation Balloon (SSIB), a simple, reliable, low-cost, non-propulsive deorbit mechanism for the full range of small satell...

A Passive High Altitude Deorbiting Strategy

A de-orbiting strategy for small satellites, in particular CubeSats, is proposed which exploits the effect of solar radiation pressure to increase the spacecraft orbit eccentricity so that the perigee falls below an altitude where atmospheric drag will cause the spacecraft orbit to naturally decay. This is achieved by fitting the spacecraft with an inflatable reflective balloon. Once this is fu...

Evaluation of Geometric and Atmospheric Doppler for GNSS-RO Payloads

To reduce the sampling rate in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-radio occultation receivers, it is essential to establish a suitable estimation of Doppler frequency from the received signal in the satellite onboard receiver. This receiver is usually located on low earth orbit satellite and receives GNSS satellites signal in the occultation situation. The occurred Doppler on the signal ...

Effects of Some Parameters on Thermal Control of a LEO Satellite

Satellite thermal control ensures safe operating temperature ranges for satellite components throughout the mission life. Effects of altitude, spin, and position of satellite radiator(s) on the thermal control of a small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite have been studied. Results show that change in satellite altitude, in the range considered here, does not produce critical thermal conditions. H...

Aerodynamic Lift and Drag Effects on the Orbital Lifetime Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites

The effects of aerodynamic perturbation forces on the orbital life of low altitude Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are investigated, with a focus on the secular perturbations caused by lift and drag. The secular effects can be divided into the circularization of the orbit for both lift and drag perturbation forces, and the decrease of the orbit semimajor axis for drag perturbation. A study of ...
